An excellent introduction to Deaf Culture. I’m in love with a deaf girl, and this excellent movie is a short course in Deaf culture. Please watch it if you know anyone who is deaf, or you just have an interest. Or just watch it because it’s a classic love story about two people who come from very different cultures. Just seeing William Hurt trying to explain Bach to a person who has never heard music is just amazing. He felt wholly inadequate to the task, as anyone would. I made like a conductor during a musical part of another movie…

I’m a fan of Marlee Matlin and learning ASL, so after hearing how this was not only her first film but that she won an Oscar for it I was really looking forward to finally getting a chance to watch it. The movie has great actors, great script, and was well paced. Although as another commenter admitted the development of their relationship from “who’s the mysterious girl” to “I love this girl” was indeed a bit quick, the rest of the film unfolded quite nicely.
